Today, I want to explore another technological breakthrough making significant progress almost daily, yet receiving less mainstream attention: nuclear fusion power.
Fasten Your Seat Belts, The Future Is Here
Nuclear fusion reactors, which harness the same process that powers our sun, are advancing at a remarkable pace. Unlike current nuclear fission plants (which split atoms), fusion reactors combine atoms—specifically hydrogen isotopes—to create larger atoms like helium, generating extraordinary amounts of energy in the process.
The Physics of Limitless Energy
To understand fusion’s revolutionary potential, consider Einstein’s famous equation, E=mc². When two hydrogen atoms fuse to create helium, the resulting mass is slightly less than the original atoms. This tiny difference in mass is converted into an immense amount of energy. To put this in perspective, the energy contained in just 2 grams of material (roughly the weight of a paperclip) converted through fusion would exceed the destructive power released by the nuclear bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.
This is clean, powerful energy on a scale that’s difficult to comprehend. A small fusion reactor could power an entire city for years with minimal fuel and virtually no environmental impact.

The massive data centers powering today’s AI systems require dozens of generators, as Elon Musk and others have built around their computing facilities. Recent Breakthroughs Bringing Fusion Closer to Reality
The fusion landscape is experiencing rapid acceleration. In recent months, we’ve seen remarkable milestones:
The French WEST reactor in Cadarache recently set a new record by maintaining plasma at 50 million degrees Celsius for over 22 minutes, surpassing China’s previous record by 25% (Advanced Science News, 2025). Meanwhile, Commonwealth Fusion Systems outside Boston is building the SPARC tokamak, which they believe could provide clean electricity to the U.S. power grid within a decade (CNN, 2025).
China has also made significant strides, with their Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak achieving sustained temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius (OilPrice.com, 2025). The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project in France recently completed a critical milestone with the assembly of the world’s most powerful magnet system (Reuters, 2025).
Private companies are also making impressive progress, with several aiming to demonstrate working fusion reactors this year (Science, 2025).
Perhaps the most profound impact of fusion power will be geopolitical. As former Saudi Oil Minister Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani famously observed: “The Stone Age did not end because the world ran out of stones, and the Oil Age will end long before the world runs out of oil.” (Reuters, 2021)
Yamani’s insight is profound. Just as bronze tools made stone tools obsolete despite abundant stones, fusion energy will render oil obsolete despite abundant reserves. The implications for oil-producing nations are enormous.
Countries like Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states, Russia, and Iran—whose economies depend heavily on oil exports—face potential economic collapse when fusion makes oil primarily valuable as a chemical feedstock rather than an energy source. This transition will create significant turbulence in governments and populations across these regions.
The question we should be considering now is what systems we should put in place to help guide these nations toward more inclusive, democratic societies with greater press freedoms and civil liberties. Rather than waiting for this inevitable transition to create chaos, we should be planning for a more orderly evolution of these oil-dependent economies.
Preparing for the Post-Oil, Fusion-Powered Future
The convergence of AI and fusion power will reshape our economic landscape. As I discussed in my previous post about AI’s impacts on employment, we need to thoughtfully consider how these technologies will transform both our energy systems and our societies.
Fusion power offers a solution to our planet’s energy challenges and could help mitigate climate change while providing abundant, low-cost energy for AI and other advanced technologies. However, the geopolitical disruptions it will cause require careful planning and international cooperation.
