AI Agents Are Real—and Easy to Deploy

Our Insights Association webinar on January 29th, 2026 opened with a live demonstration showing just how simple it is to deploy an AI agent to complete a survey. Using a commercially available tool and a short prompt, an AI was instructed to assume a specific persona and take a live online survey. The agent navigated screeners, attention checks, matrix questions, sliders, and even image-based questions with ease.

The takeaway was clear: creating an AI agent capable of completing surveys no longer requires programming skills or technical knowledge. With the right prompt, AI can complete a 25-minute survey while appearing attentive, consistent, and human-like.

The Bigger (and Older) Problem: Human Fraud

Before diving deeper into AI, the webinar zoomed out to address a critical reality of online research: human fraud has been a massive problem for years. Drawing on data from billions of surveys and third-party research, it was noted that an estimated 30–40% of online survey responses are fraudulent or unusable.

Importantly, much of this fraud is frequently mislabeled as “bots.” It is overwhelmingly driven by humans working in organized click farms across the globe. These respondents are often incentivized to qualify for as many surveys as possible, regardless of eligibility or comprehension.

Why Human Fraud Often Looks Like Bots

Through interviews and video-based follow-ups with fraudulent respondents, clear behavioral patterns emerge. Many respondents do not speak the survey language fluently and rely on simple heuristics—such as saying “yes” to most questions—to pass screeners. This leads to well-documented biases like acquiescence bias, over-agreement, and implausible claims (e.g., purchasing homes in towns with 30 residents or using fictitious products).

Because these response patterns can look automated at scale, they are often mistaken for bot activity—even though they are human-driven.

AI Changes the Scale of the Threat

The real concern arises when these same fraud networks gain access to AI tools. Unlike human fraudsters, AI agents:

  • Speak fluent, natural language
  • Generate coherent open-ended responses
  • Maintain internal consistency with assigned personas
  • Pass traditional attention and logic checks at very high rates

Recent academic research discussed in the webinar demonstrates that AI agents can pass thousands of attention checks with near-perfect accuracy, making many standard fraud detection methods ineffective on their own.

Detectable Differences Still Exist

Despite these advances, the webinar emphasized an important point: AI agents are not invisible. While they may mimic humans in some ways, they also exhibit detectable behavioral signatures when researchers know where to look. These differences allow for reliable identification—often with very high accuracy—using the right combination of tools and methodologies.

The key is moving beyond surface-level checks and adopting behavioral, pattern-based approaches that address both human and AI-driven fraud.

What This Means for the Future of Research

The session concluded with a forward-looking discussion on data quality in the age of AI. As survey fraud evolves, so must the methods used to detect it. Relying on any single tactic—whether attention checks, captchas, or trap questions—is no longer sufficient.

Instead, the future of high-quality research lies in layered defenses, continuous monitoring, and tools specifically designed to identify sophisticated threats without compromising respondent experience or data integrity.
